September: Checkerboard Spiral

This freehand design got away from me. You have to be careful when do checkerboard stuff, otherwise you can't fill it in evenly. If you aren't anal about symmetry like I am, go nuts.

Spirals, aside from being cool and fun to draw with the kistka, are some form of protective design. They trap demons or something, the way Pennsylvania Dutch designs are supposed to. That's as much as I remember from the discussion at my first pysanky party, in 1988.
